Architecture and the Unspeakable 2 - Shibuya

John Szot

Shibuya, Tokyo. A disorienting paradox emerges: the more you stick out, the more you blend in.

As the sickly sweet animatronic voice guides you through part 2 of the 3 part series "Architecture and the Unspeakable," by John Szot Studio, one is exposed to the unique paradox of Shibuya: the more you stick out, the more you blend in.

In this video, the viewer is taken on a disorienting ride through the blinking lights and cacophonous noises of a theoretical housing project that could exist only in Shibuya, Tokyo, Japan. Like an architectural Tower of Babel, the discordant spaces and idiosyncratic styles come together to create one amalgamated object, which disappears into the hustle and bustle of Tokyo's busiest neighborhood.

With the glitz and glamour of a commercial for the latest domestic appliance, and just enough of the frenetic energy and grime of the city streets, the video exposes to us the spatial connections of this project the way only a video can.
