About

Madrid based Manuel Ocaña Architecture and Thought Production Office has developed a wide range of projects, from landscape design to restoration and reinvention, which have operated under the desire to create a bridge between technological, artistic and cultural demands. Manuel Ocaña currently lectures at ETSAM, Madrid Technical School of Architecture, and directs an online Design Studio at the IE School of Architecture. Having participated in international competitions and lecture series, his ideas and built work have been well recognized and awarded several prizes. In the projects themselves, clearly represented in the videos the office produces, the world is seemingly represented as a series of intersections: the past and the present, the analog and the digital, the interior and the exterior. The office investigates this duality of nature and how to converge these forking paths to create an architecture, and a representation of it, that responds to the changing times and socio-cultural demands of modern society. It is through the office's use of video and short films, as seen in "Affairs in Blue" and "Gran Via Media", that they are able to create a dialogue that begins to touch at these investigations into the nature of architecture. At times humorous, and often a bit surreal, the ever shifting views and changing perspectives of these video productions articulate a larger idea of architecture, of design, and of the future. Like Ocaña's architecture itself, the videos produced by the office combine the old and the new, pushing limits to the edge, creating pieces that are composed with the malleability of the present and the strong foundation of the past.
