About

Netherlands-based architecture firm KAAN Architecten operates with a strategical and multidisciplinary approach in the fields of architecture, urbanism and research worldwide. The Rotterdam studio - founded in 2014 - is led by Kees Kaan, Vincent Panhuysen and Dikkie Scipio and consists of an international team of architects, engineers, landscape architects, graphic designers and urban planners. Moving across multiple platforms and disciplines and numerous collaborations allowed the firm to foster a constant critic debate within the studio and to develop its various works with an always new and non obvious perspective at all scales and for all types of projects. KAAN Architecten's interventions include a wide range of activities, both with the public and the private sector, from residential buildings and offices, to retail to theaters, museums and buildings for the health and education. KAAN Architecten team was internationally awarded in numerous occasions for their many works. Among these, the Education Center Erasmus MC (Rotterdam) won the 9th Saint-Gobain Gypsum International Trophy (plasterboard category) as runner-up, won the yearly award dedicated to transformation projects on the occasion of the Rotterdam Architecture Prize (2013), and afterwards it was part of the touring exhibition featuring the 40 shortlisted project for the Mies van der Rohe Award 2015. On the occasion of the shortlist nomination of the Education Center for the Mies van der Rohe Award (2015), the Dutch firm commissioned to Victor Vroegindeweij a shor film introducing the building: "The Learn'd" narrates the engaging dialogue between light and space within KAAN Architecten's project, an intervention that transformed an abandoned external atrium into the new enlightened central hall at the medical faculty of the Erasmus University (Rotterdam).
