Spirit of Space

Video postcards from the museum designed by Steven Holl.

Parallel and shifting perspectives accompany the viewers along a slow tour in the Sifang Art Museum (Nanjing, China). Spirit of Space once again introduces a building designed by Steven Holl, and depicts the museum as a place for the contemplation of art in the inside, and as a privileged observatory to look outside to the lush green landscape of the Pearl Spring near Nanjing.

Directly inspired by the the spatial perception of the 13th century Chinese paintings - in which "the viewer travels with the painting"- , the combined live-footage frames of the short film allow to experience the movements of people through the multiple, parallel viewpoints of the black-and-white, layered spaces of the museum.

Spirit of Space's camera experiences the project from different angles and at different scales, from the garden walls in black bamboo-formed concrete in the courtyard, to the upper gallery suspended high in the air, which culminates with the distant view of the city of Nanjing.
