House of Eternity

Domaine de Boisbuchet

Where time flows and floats.

Every space has its peculiar character and stirs the emotions. La Datcha is a site-specific artwork produced by the Russian architect and artist Alexander Brodsky during a workshop at the Domain de Boisbuchet and it is placed in the greenery. A "dacha" is a typical Russian seasonal second home, often located in the exurbs. The artist interpreted the object by building a small wooden house made of residual doors and windows. The construction was then the focus of another workshop, entitled "The Emotion of Space" and conducted by Ila Beka and Louise Lemoine. The participants were encouraged to question that particular space and then to understand their personal feelings and translate their emotions into cinematic language. As result, they produced the three short films "House of Eternity", "House of Memories" and "House of Strange".

"House of Eternity" was filmed by Valentina Cafarotti and Maria Fernanda Valdés. The creators intended to explore the two different realities that Brodsky recreated in such a small space. On the first approach the house splits reality into two: outside and inside. Duality is even stronger inside. The small building is entirely made of doors, but only two of them permit entry. This peculiar composition has consequences for the perception of space: upon entering, one feels two different sensations standing in the same space, depending on what is moveable and what is fixed. The filmmakers explore this unusual perception and emphasize it. Inside the house, an imaginary white line distinguishes two the parts, one where time flows and the other where time floats. Temporary and eternity stand side by side. The visitor must now make a choice and pick a side.
