Klong Toey Community Lantern

TYIN tegnestue Architects

A sustainable public space in Bangkok to light up an active community.

The timelapse sequence of "Klong Toey Community Lantern" introduces a long-term strategy of social sustainability conceived by TYIN tegnestue Architects for the Klong Toey area (Bangkok, Thailand) - one of the largest and oldest areas of informal dwellings with great social and economical challenges - and developed through the collective construction of a simple, open and adaptable structure for a climbing frame and a basketball court.

After a year of public meetings, interviews and workshops, the project team got involved with the community to design and build the structure of the public playground in three weeks along with the local inhabitants and a group of students. The aim of the Norwegian architects was mainly to give the local population a tool to tackle some of the social issues in the area, a small and yet significant contribution for a positive change.
