Approaching the Inscrutable

Elettra Bocca

A walk through contemporary architecture in Genoa: Holy Family Church by Ludovico Quaroni.

The video "Approaching the Inscrutable" was conceived and filmed by students of the "Architectural Design" course held by Valter Scelsi at Genoa University. The aim was to focus attention on contemporary architecture and its maintenance: when architectural value is overlooked, even valuable buildings are affected by deterioration.

The video focuses on the Holy Family Church in Genoa designed by Ludovico Quaroni. The filmmaker contrasts the deteriorated conditions of the building's outer appearance with the lively vivace tempo of Antonio Vivaldi's music, while slow and stately notes accompany the overview of the interiors which are better conserved. The building requires more maintenance and attention to enhance its image.
