About

Luis Urculo operates at the intersection of architecture, graphic design, video and visual arts. He intertwines these fields quite successfully, his works being at the same time immediately communicative while at the same time profound. Urculo studied at the ETSAM in Madrid, a fertile ground where many other architects who are especially keen on videos were also trained. He worked as a designer with Philippe Starck, he made his debut in the world of videos when collaborating with Mansilla+Tuñón and with ACXT. The videos he made for these two Spanish offices present architecture as the background for the daily activities that take place in them or as places of affection and remembrance. His artistic research reinvigorated ideas and results he accomplished with his architectural videos. And it greatly enriched his work as a filmmaker. Extremely curious and fond of the most diverse objects all around us, Urculo uses them as raw materials to enrich still lives that, in his videos, become unexpectedly animated. He strips them of their original meaning, and offers them a new one. He uses them as an excuse for extraordinary architectural explorations. By doing so, he employs strategies of abstraction and estrangement which, though usually belonging to the world of the arts, also pertain to the work of a filmmaker. Architecture is thus enriched. Through his videos, the projects declare in a simple and direct way that which they will offer to the community who will use them. And built projects gradually reveal themselves, subtly, in front of the eyes of the observer.
