About

Laura Cantarella is an Italian architect and photographer specialized in landscape and reporting. With her projects and video-reportages she explores and investigates the transformations of landscape through an original visual approach. An architecture graduate from the Politecnico di Torino and a PhD candidate at the Universitat Pompeu Fabra, Humanitats in Barcelona, she is associate professor at her alma mater. Her works have been shown in international festivals and venues, such as the Second International Architectural Biennal in Rotterdam; the BEYOND MEDIA festival in Florence, Italy; CCCB in Barcelona, Spain; MACBA in Barcelona, Spain; Teatro Mercat de les Flors in Barcelona, Spain; II Bienal de las artes de Valencia, Spain; Círculo de Bellas Artes, Madrid, Spain; Salone del Mobile in Milan, Italy; Venice Architecture Biennale. She was also one of the awarded artists at the Premio Terna per L'arte Contemporanea in Rome, Italy (2008). Her architectural video "The endless present utopia" was produced to be shown in the Spanish sector of the "The Flood" (Second International Architecture Biennal, Rotterdam) in May 2005. The 'present utopia' narrated in the video is tourism considered as a way to live places in an endless and yet apparent moment of happiness. Cantarella observes and documents touristic locations of the Southern Spanish coast and their everyday routine in the form of a video-reportage by means of alternating the tourists' internal perspective and a more externally informed one. In 2007 with Lucia Giuliano she founded Landform, an independent organization and online platform focused on the research and survey of contemporary landscape as cultural and shared construction.
