About

Francesco Mattuzzi (1979) is an Italian artist who uses photography and video as means to research and represent contemporary urban and social contexts. Mattuzzi's sociological investigations have an ethnographic approach and are mostly focused on the exploration of the original situations of sub-cultures.

Born in Varese and raised in Rovereto, he attended Francesco Jodice's photography class at the Free University of Bozen and later he completed his education in Milan through collaborations with Jodice and Armin Linke. At the same time, he was pursuing a sociological investigation on the world of truck drivers and the decorative stratifications of cultural signs in their vehicles. After this experience, Mattuzzi took part in "Decolonizing Architecture" together with Linke, an architectural studio and art residency program founded by Sandi Hilal, Alessandro Petti and Eyal Weizman and based in Beit Sahour (Palestine). The project aimed to explore the transformation of occupied Palestinian territories and the possibilities for the reuse and subversion of structures of domination from a perspective that combines politics, culture and urban planning and makes large use of experimental film techniques.

Part of this revolutionary and challenging program, the 3d documentary "Future Archaeology" by Linke and Mattuzzi is a sort of magic box through which the audience can envision the imagined scenario of the evacuation of the Israeli colonies and military bases in Palestine. The video becomes a powerful means to imagine future transformations of evacuated military bases and refugee camps into residential developments, as well as a unique occasion to reflect on the current situation from a new, more aware viewpoint. The sociological approach of Mattuzzi's research also influences "Shapes", a short documentary that was part of a larger work launched in 2008 and commissioned by the Fondazione Adriano Olivetti. In this work, Mattuzzi presents five projects Olivetti commissioned for the city of Ivrea by means of immersing them in a frozen atmosphere that recalls scenes from some classical 1960s sci-fi movies.'"Future Archaelogy" and "Shapes" were also photographic projects related to the same theme of the videos. Matuzzi's wide video production also includes "The weight of dreams" (a video installation, winner of "Editors Online" for the magazine Abitare), "White Planet" (official selection at numerous Italian festivals- such as the 61 Trento Film Festival and the FMK Film Festival in Pordenone - and International venues, such as the Bansko Film Festival in Bulgaria) and "Eyelid" (premiered at the 63 Trento Film Festival).

Besides the numerous awards, Mattuzzi's video and photographic works has also been exhibited in solo and collective exhibitions, including at the Galleria Civica in Trento and Fabbrica del Vapore in Milan, Redcat in Los Angeles, Queensland Art Gallery, Stanley Place, in Brisbane.
